TIRKubik :  System to Measure the Volume of Truck Load

Weighbridge systems, which are indispensable at factory entrances and exits, can only measure the weight of the truck load. However, raw materials such as wood and excavation are priced in cubic meters (ster). So, if your manufacturing involves such raw materials, tonnage information only gives you an approximate idea of ​​pricing. For this reason, when we sent this project to the Industry-Focused R&D and Innovation Competition organized by Adana Organized Industrial Zone (AOSB), it was awarded the third prize by the jury, which recognized the value of the project.

As seen on the side, the TIRKubik system consists of a LIDAR at the entrance of the weighbridge platform (Factory buildings are hidden) and a camera system that can see the truck bed from the side and rear. As the truck passes under the mast, it is scanned by LIDAR and camera. The feature of our system is that the camera can measure how much the trailer sinks towards the ground due to the load. It also measures camera trailer dimensions and type. By combining all this data, a 3-D model of the truck is created. The picture below shows the 3-D drawing of the wood-loaded truck, which is loaded in two horizontal rows, displayed on the screen by the system.

Although the truck load height limit on highways is 4 meters, dear Turkish truckers manage to load loads up to 5 meters. For this reason, they crashed into the pole seen in the picture above, even though it was 4.5 meters high, and damaged the pole and the LIDAR. Based on this lesson, the TIRkubik-2 model, made of composite material, was developed. The price of the entire system with this model is 165,000 TL. The much stronger TIRkubik-3, which is manufactured using both composite and steel, is shown on the side. Its price is 168,000 TL. For the system to work, the LIDAR must be at least 50 cm above the load. Prices are valid until the end of May 2024.

THE SYSTEM HAS A 1-YEAR WARRANTY, BUT TRUCK CRASH IS NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY FOR ANY MODEL.

Our system is currently only able to measure the load of flatbed trucks, but soon a model that measures the load volume of flatbed trucks used to transport raw materials such as excavation or sawdust will also be developed. An example of this type of safe is shown below.

The distance between LIDAR and the computer should not exceed around 30 meters. The LIDAR mast must be mounted in the opposite direction of the truck approach. In this way, the LIDAR is relatively protected by ensuring that the truck hits the pole first.
